Your First Tattoo
Everything first-timers need to know — from choosing your design to walking out the door with fresh ink.
Most first-timers stress about having the "perfect" design before they walk in. You don't need that. Bring a reference photo, a Pinterest board, a rough sketch on a napkin, or even just a concept — "I want something with mountains and trees" is plenty. Justin will take your idea and build it into a custom design that works as a tattoo.
Where you put your first tattoo affects both the experience and the result. Some areas hurt more than others (ribs, feet, inner arm). Some designs need a certain size to hold detail over time. Justin will advise you on the best placement and size for your specific design during your free consultation.
Some people want their first tattoo to have deep personal meaning. Others just want something that looks cool. Both are valid. There's no rule that says your first tattoo has to "mean something." If you like it, that's reason enough.
Your first step is a consultation — always free at Apex. Justin will look at your reference, discuss size and placement, recommend the best style approach, and give you an honest price. No pressure. If you're not ready to commit, that's fine.
Before any ink touches your skin, Justin will place a stencil (a temporary outline) on your body so you can see exactly how the tattoo will look in that spot. If the placement isn't right, we adjust. You don't commit until you're 100% happy with the position.
Here's the truth: it hurts, but it's manageable. Most people describe it as a scratching or burning sensation. The first few minutes are the worst — after that, your body adjusts. Justin works at a steady pace and takes breaks when needed. You're in a private studio, so there's no pressure or audience.
Small tattoos (wrist, ankle, simple designs) can take 30-60 minutes. Medium pieces take 2-3 hours. Large custom work can take 4-6+ hours, sometimes split across multiple sessions. Justin will give you a time estimate during your consultation.
Yes, but probably less than you think. Pain varies by location on the body. Generally, areas with more fat or muscle (upper arm, thigh, calf) are easier. Areas over bone or with thin skin (ribs, feet, collarbone, inner arm) are more sensitive. Most first-timers say it was less painful than they expected.
Justin has tattooed hundreds of first-timers and knows how to keep you comfortable. Private studio, steady pace, breaks when needed. You're not getting tattooed in a crowded shop with people watching — it's just you and Justin.
Justin will walk you through aftercare step by step before you leave. We also have a complete aftercare guide on our website. The basics: keep it clean, keep it moisturized, stay out of the sun, don't pick at it. Your tattoo will fully heal in 2-4 weeks.
